Patient undergoing acupuncture to reduce rheumatic pain |
|||||
Western Medical Acupuncture Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions and is especially effective in reducing musculoskeletal, arthritic and rheumatic pain There are many more conditions that acupuncture can effectively help with and clinical trials are now being established by many health care professionals. The needles used are sterile and disposable and you will receive a separate sterile needle for each insertion point. These fine needles have no internal bore like a needle required for injection purposes. They are safe and normally pain free upon insertion although a strong sensation of heaviness, tingling and or aching may be experienced from the target structure needled. In traditional acupuncture, these sensations are known as "De Qi". Non-needle laser acupuncture or acupoint stimulation can be used for needle phobic patients and children. Certificates issued by the British Medical Acupuncture Society can be provided for blood donors and these are accepted by the NHS blood transfusion service. A small charge is levied for these certificates. Electrotherapy modalities can also be connected to the acupuncture needles to increase their stimulation and overall effect. Western Medical Acupuncture is making a large impact in the NHS with many health care professional adopting to train and utilise this age old tradition in complimentary medicine. |
