Western Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a treatment that involves the insertion of fine hairlike needles into the body. This age-old treatment has now evolved into a clinical speciality in medicine. Acupuncture treatments can help to alleviate symptoms of muscle pain and spasm and evidence-based research has shown it to be effective in a variety of medical conditions.
Electroacupuncture
Electroacupuncture allows a mild electric current to pass down the shafts of two independent needles into the tissue structures. Theses needles can be any distance apart and the effects can be highly efficient at relieving muscle spasm and discomfort. This treatment can be very beneficial for muscular- gluteal sciatica.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in the skin and muscles, it can be sedative and it is known to increase the body’s release of natural painkillers (endorphin and serotonin). This modifies the way in which pain signals are received, but acupuncture does much more than reduce pain. It also has a beneficial effect on health and clients often notice an improved sense of wellbeing after treatment.
Is acupuncture pain free?
Acupuncture is normally pain free although a strong sensation of heaviness, heat, tingling and or aching may be experienced from the target structure needled. These sensations are known as De Qi in traditional acupuncture. Sometimes occasional bleeding can arise resulting in a bruise but this is rare.
Attending for your appointment
A thorough assessment and examination will be undertaken at your appointment and this will allow us to formulate an understanding of your injury or condition. A full explanation of the examination and proposed treatment will be provided to you and you will be asked to sign a consent form. You will also have the opportunity throughout your entire appointment to ask any questions. You may be asked to undertake some tests to check your range and ease of functional movement and we will need to examine the specific areas of tissue and joint structures that are affected or contributing to the problem. A spinal examination is always beneficial as any misalignment here can be accountable for many problems.

Are disposable needles used?
If you attend for acupuncture, then please be aware that the needles used at our clinic are sterile and disposable and you will receive a separate sterile needle for each insertion point. The needles are very fine and have no internal bore like a needle required for injection purposes. The needles are inserted through the skin and can be advanced into muscles and bone. The needles can be stimulated by hand or electrotherapy modalities.
